know the town

Before you choose the house.

Six towns sit on one rail line here, twelve minutes end to end — and they are not interchangeable. I’ll tell you what actually separates them before you tour a single home.

The problem

You can’t tell any of this from a listing photo.

Every portal shows you the house. None of them show you the life — how long the commute really is, whether the express stops at your station, what the street is like at seven in the morning. So people tour twenty houses and still choose on a feeling.

What that costs
  • Buying the block that looks identical and isn’t — and learning it on the first winter commute.
  • Choosing the town on one sunny Saturday and living with it for ten years.
  • Losing the right house because the search never got specific enough to move fast.
What it looks like done right
  • A house on a street that fits the life you’re actually living.
  • A decision made on facts you can check, not a feeling on a Sunday.
  • Knowing the town well enough to be the one your friends ask.
The plan

Three steps, in this order.

It’s the same order every time, and the order is the whole method.

01

Know the town

Which station, which schools, what the taxes actually run — and which of the three Downers Grove stops gets the fast train. (Two do. One never has.) You get the answers before you fall for anything.

02

Know the block

Two houses one street apart are not in the same market. Boundaries, water, the walk to the platform, what 7am sounds like. This is the part no listing page will ever tell you.

03

Then look at houses

With the criteria that actually decide it already settled. By the time we open a front door, we both know what we’re looking for — so you can trust the yes when it comes.

The corridor

Six towns. One line. Twelve minutes.

This is the map I work — ride times counted from the timetable myself, not guessed. Most buyers shop one town. Almost nobody compares the line.

Naperville12 min west—
Lisle6 min west—
Downers Grovethe base$514K
Westmont5 min east—
Clarendon Hills8 min east$712K
Hinsdale11 min east$1.30M

Ride times: Metra BNSF weekday inbound, timetable effective 3 August 2026, measured from Downers Grove (Main Street). Typical values: Zillow ZHVI, June 2026; three towns shown with a dash are ones I haven’t pulled yet — I’d rather leave them blank than estimate them.

What you get from me

Three promises, in writing.

  • I’ll tell you when a house is wrong for you, even if you love it.
  • I won’t send you listings you could have found yourself.
  • No pressure to buy this year. Eighteen months out is a great time to start.
Start here

Tell me what you’re looking for.

Two minutes now saves a season of touring the wrong streets. I read every one of these myself and reply personally — usually same day.

No listing spam, no drip campaign you can’t escape. If you’d rather just ask a question about one block, that counts too.

Thanks.

It’s on my desk — I’ll reply personally, usually the same day. In the meantime, the six-part series is the best place to start.

Questions people actually ask
I’m 12–18 months out. Too early?

That’s the best time to start. The town-and-block work takes weeks, not days, and doing it early is how people end up ready when the right house appears instead of rushing the decision.

I don’t know which town yet.

Perfect — that’s the whole point of starting here. Tell me the commute you have to protect and the budget that has to stretch, and we’ll narrow six towns to two.

Do I have to work with you to ask?

No. Ask me about a block, a station, a tax bill. I answer either way; that’s the job I like.

What does this cost me?

Nothing to talk. In a purchase, the compensation conversation happens up front, in writing, before you commit to anything — and I’ll walk you through exactly how it works.
